The terrain of Dobong-gu is characterized by the Ui-cheon (stream) that forms the boundary with Gangbuk-gu in the southwest and Dobong-san (mountain) that forms the boundary with Uijeongbu-si in the north. There is a low-lying area in the east that corresponds to the southern end of the Chugaryeong Basin, which starts from the Yeongheungman (harbor) of Wonsan in Hamgyeongnam-do (province) and extends from Seoul to the west coast. This is a narrow and long valley through which the Jungnangcheon, a tributary of the Han River, flows. To the north of this valley lies the eastern low-lying area, with mountains such as Bulamsan (508 m) and Suraksan (637.7 m) located near Nowon-gu.
Dobongsan, the symbol of Dobong-gu, is adjacent to Bukhansan, known as the ‘guardian mountain of Seoul’. It boasts the picturesque landscape created by the magnificent peaks like Jaunbong (739.5 m), Manjangbong (718 m), Seoninbong (708 m), and Obong (625 m) that are surrounded by clear streams and lush forests.
Seo Geo-jeong, a poet during the rein of King Sejong, who also served as the magistrate of Hanseongbu (today’s Mayor of Seoul Metropolitan City) twice, is said to have recited the following poem at the foot of Manjangbong while admiring the beautiful scenery of Dobongsan.
From a high attic, lifting a glass with a smile / Numerous green peaks piled up high / For ten years, composed homecoming poems without doing much / My affectionate white hair urges me incessantly
Geologically, Dobongsan was formed by the weathering and erosion of granite bedrock from the Paleozoic era, consisting of domed cliffs and peaks of large-scale granite formed by the intense Mesozoic orogeny, known as the Daebo Orogeny, which occurred approximately 200 million years ago during the mid-Jurassic period, marked as the most intense tectonic event in the geological history of the Korean Peninsula.
The summer temperature in Dobong-gu, which is located on the outskirts of the city, is relatively lower than the heat zones of the city, with an average of 1~2 ℃ cooler temperature. The climate is as follows:
